Making A Home Office Safety Plan

Home office

Making a home office safety plan is more important than you might think! Whether you work remotely full-time or are simply trying to get some extra work done on a snow day, working from home can be an awesome way to spend the day. However, staying safety conscious in a safe-feeling environment can be difficult. Make sure to stay safe, even in your home office. Here are some tips on home office safety!

Tripping Hazards

When working from home, you need to take an active role in your personal safety. After all, no one else is there to monitor you. To avoid unnecessary accidents, remove tripping hazards from your walking path. Extension cords, computer wires, trash cans, and other small objects can easily cause a fall. To protect your health, proactively remove and secure these obstacles from your home office. This will help keep you safe during the workday!

Fire Safety

Fire drills aren’t just for big company buildings. You need to have a fire extinguisher in your office as well as a planned route of escape in case of emergency. With over 350,000 home fires each year, it pays to be prepared. Make sure your office is easily accessible and has a clear path out of the house. This can limit your chances of getting stuck during an emergency.

It’s also important to limit the chances of fire by optimizing your home office for fire safety. Aside from keeping a fire extinguisher in your office, pay attention to where you put any flammable substances, such as paper. If you keep a coffee pot in your office, make sure it has plenty of space as to not burn or ignite anything else.

Electrical Safety

Electrical issues are common in home offices, but can easily be avoided. A common cause of electrical issues is the overloading of electrical circuits. As remote workers try to squeeze everything they need for work into a spare bedroom, they often put too many plugs in an outlet.

Just because you have a power strip DOES NOT mean that you can use that many plugs in an outlet. Overusing an outlet can cause electrical fires. When using an excess amount of plugs in a home office, consult an electrician.

Air Quality

Air quality is vital to your health. Sitting in a small, windowless room all day isn’t good for you. Doing so can exacerbate existing health conditions or worsen allergies. Here are some tips to improve air quality in your home office.

  • Work in a well-ventilated area
  • Don’t smoke in your office. Go outside
  • Purchase and install a carbon monoxide detector for your office
  • Observe proper use of toxic chemicals and cleaners

Personal Health

Finally, take care of your personal health. In a season where it’s so easy to get sick, keep yourself healthy. Here are some practical ways to do this while working from home.

  • Take regular breaks to walk around
  • Exercise a few times a week
  • Eat healthy lunches instead of fast food every day
  • Get plenty of sleep each night
  • Get an ergonomically correct chair, keyboard, and mouse. If you’re going to be spending hours each day on a computer, limit the damage it will do to your body by taking proactive measures.

At the end of the day, whether working from home or going to a building, you’re responsible for your health and safety. Don’t relax on this matter just because you’re working from home. Understanding what safety risks are around you enables you to take measures to prevent accidents. Take control of your safety and enjoy working from home!
